BE BRAVE

Be Brave is a joint venture between myself and fellow LCC student Alex Hunting. Our project started as a way of recording and sharing various student experiences from the DPS year out in industry that LCC offers 2nd year students. Alex and I collected stories and images from the students and began to collate a body of work in order to create a publication about the year. We quickly realised that there was more scope to the project than simply cataloging a year of internships, that it was a dialogue between education and industry and how you go about bridging that gap. We approached leading practitioners to write articles for the publication and conducted interviews, in order to have a more balanced view of the importance of internships in a creative career.
Be Brave is to become an annual publication created by each years new crop of returning DPS students. The idea is to continue to promote and encourage students to be ambitious, some of the placements and activities students undertook are overwhelming and the process of creating the paper is a fantastic task for students to undertake on their return from the year. Organising and collecting material, commissioning articles, approaching professionals, dealing with proofs, printing quotes, and generally being pro-active, are all essential skills for the young designer leaving college.
Our title is taken from the interview we conducted with Jonathan Ellery of Browns. When asked if he had any final words for aspiring creative’s out there, he replied “Be brave”.
